Mother

Has it really been a year since I wrote in this?  Wow...

So I rediscover the whole Mother series every couple of years, and become completely obsessed with it for a while.  Last time, I ended up importing Mother 1+2 and Mother 3, even though I never played either of them that much (I didn't know enough Japanese, so it was kind of hard).  This time, I started playing Earthbound just in time to visit Starmen.net again, only to find that they were basically sieging Nintendo with phone calls and letters.  Figuring that I should finally play through Mother 3, I found a story translation and determined that I did, in fact, know enough Japanese to figure out what the attacks and items do.  I'm about a third of the way through, and so far...

; _ ;

That's all I'll say.  I'd also yell several expletives at Nintendo for not releasing it here, but if Lucas, several Mother items, and NEW PORK CITY are going to be featured in SSBB, maybe there's the faintest glimmer of a chance that I'll get to play all three on my DS in English...

Incidentally, Mother 3 has made for some interesting conversations with my Japanese teacher (ushihebi...cowsnake?!).

And on an unrelated note, my math test yesterday was much easier than I expected it to be.  I doubt he'll need to curve it by 6.022 * 10^23 like I suggested (since yesterday was mole day!).  I particularly liked that the question on inclusion and exclusion involved Rubik's Cubes, Portal, and the Atari E.T. game.

Rogue Tomato: The Hunt Begins!

Get ready for a really long rant...

Final Fantasy XII Intro

Not about the video, though.  I have a feeling that by the time I'm done with it (which may be a while, since I had to start over because I missed some tiny detail that allows me to get the best weapon...), Final Fantasy XII is going to be my favorite of them all.  I don't think I've ever been as happy/relieved, not only when the Prologue starts playing, but when the actual Theme kicks in.  As far as I know, neither song has been in the title sequence, especially the Theme.

So, why was I so happy even though I hadnt started playing?  I think I realized it when the beginning credits were flashing up.

Nomura's name = nowhere to be found

I know I've ranted about this before, but I need to do it again because it's somewhat timely.  Nomura = suck.  That's about it.  So far, XII's story is by far the most realistic and dramatic.  None of this stupid time-traveling, save the planet shit that was in EVERY SINGLE ONE OF NOMURA'S FINAL FANTASIES.  The characters actually have unique personality, and the scenery is beautiful and whimsical.  BUT!  Knowing the FF FANBOIS who grew up with VII, some people will be like "WTF TEH GHEY WERE R TEH GUNZ AND SEXZORZ TIFAAA."  I hate this.  It's like people saying that 2001 is a bad movie because they "didn't understand it."  It's hard to come up with valid arguments when you're talking to someone who doesn't have a brain.

Which isn't to say that FFVII is bad.  It's just different.  However, I can't help but feel resentful against Nomura, who tried to take the series in a different direction while pretty much raping some of the previous fans of the series.  Why are people wearing suits?  Where are the crystals?  Guns?  Nomura took the Fantasy out of the games, and I missed it.  IX brought it back, and people hated it, because it was "completely different from the other games."  No it wasn't.  VII and VIII were different.  Go to hell.

VIII leaves in some sort of conundrum, though, because I actually like it.  Is it because it wasn't as well recieved as VII?  Do I only like VII slightly less because Nomura has turned it into Square-Enix's prostitute while failing to acknowledge other, better games?  That sounds about right.

Anyway, XII is good because it's the PERFECT mix of older atmosphere with new touches, like the battle and level system.  Obviously, Nomura didn't have to completely change the tone of the games when he took over as Lead Designer/Scenario Writer/Else.

Also, Balthier is my new Setzer.  Oh yeah.

Infinite Nerdiness

Yeah, so I imported Pearl. Even though I can't understand what anybody is saying to me, I've gotten two badges and am able to find my way around and fight people. This post is as much me talking to myself and figuring out my team as much as it is asking anyone who reads this which Pokemon I should use based on how cool they are. Unless you know anything about the game, that is...

Anyway, here's what my team will be once all three of my main pokemon evolve...

Current

The first is grass/ground, the second flying/normal, and the third is electric. This means I can kill water, fire, bug, steel, fighting, grass, flying, poison, rock, electric, ice, and ground, assuming pokemon with only one type and I have all my facts straight. I need to find something supereffective against Ghost, Psychic, Dark, Normal, and Dragon. Blegh. I looked at the ones that I thought I could use based on how they looked, and I came up with this...

Maybe

From left to right, they are...
Floatsel: Water
Muumajii: Ghost
Toritodon: Water
Toridops: Steel/Rock
Palkia: Water/Dragon
Dokurogu: Poison/Fighting
Dootakun: Steel/Psychic
Weavile: Dark/Ice

Just typing this, I think I'm closer to picking three. Uni-types need to go, so I can have a better range, so no Floatsel, Muumajii, or Toritodon. Toridops looks cool, but I don't like 4x weakness to fighting. Dammit, both Weavile and Dokurogu have 4x weaknesses to something, too...Eh, I think Psychic is more common than fighting, plus a member of the Elite Four is Psychic, so I'll go with Weavile. So I'll eventually have all the original three plus...

Weavile
Dootakun
Palkia

Good. What do you guys think?

Even more nerdy sadness...

First off, I managed to beat Pokemon Emerald yesterday, so I'll be able to go and get Mew. Huzzah!

Secondly, people have managed to rip all the sprites of the new pokemon from Diamond and Pearl, or at least the sprites that show up in your party. They can be found...here.

Diamond and Pearl Pokemon

So, yeah. Now I'm going to tell what I think of ALL OF THEM!!!

387-89 - The grass starters. These are cool. Actually, they're cooler than cool. You can't really tell from this sprite, but the final evolution, Dotaitos, is based on the whole "Turtle with the world on its' back," complete with mini mountain ranges and trees. It's kickass. Grass/Ground will get raped by ice types, though...

390-92 - The fire starters. They're okay, I guess. About on par with the Torchic line. I really wish that the final was Fire/Psychic, though, because I wanted some weird monkey shaman thing.

393-95 - The water starters. I didn't think these were that great at first, but the final evolution changed my mind. It's basically an Emperor Penguin with a "steel tuxedo" look, and a gold crown on its' head. It's between this one and the grass for my starter. I'll probably go with this one, though, because the Water/Steel combination is nicer than Grass/Ground.

Honestly, I think that these are the best starters. Ever. If not ever, then they're at least on par with the Red/Blue/Green starters. Gold/Silver/Crystal were generic, and R/S/E were okay. The Grass set in this series is really cool, as is the water. Anyway...

396-98 - Some birds. Meh, another set of Pidgey-esque things.

399-400 - BEAVERS! FINALLY! It'll be an HM Slave.

401-02 - Some really weird bugs. Nice to see plain Bug-types and not some combination that ruins their usefulness.

403-05 - What looks like Electric hyenas or something. Neat

406-07 - Pre-evolution and Evolution of Roselia. Now Roselia will actually be quasi-useful.

408-11 - FOSSIL POKEMON! A T-Rex and a Triceratops?! Hell yes! I love how the Triceratops is basically a bulldozer, with it's square head.

412-13 - I though this was a pre-evolution of Pineco. I was wrong, and now I have no idea what the hell it is.

414-16 - I have no idea. Some weird Bug/Flying thing that looks like an evil moth or something.

417 - Cute little electric squirrel. It already annoys me.

418-19 - Sea otters! Hurray!

420-21 - Cherry blossoms. Kind of strange, but okay...

422-23 - Okay, I really though that first was a pre-evolution of Lapras, but it evolves into something Water/Ground? Will it be able to evolve into either one? Hmm...

424 - HELL YES AIPOM EVOLUTION. Aipom sucks. Oh well.

425-26 - Ghost/Flying thing that looks like a hot air balloon. Ghost/Flying is an interesting mix...

427-28 - Cute little bunnies. With big ears.

429 - Uh, sweet. I absolutely LOVE Misdreavus, and now it can turn into something with even bigger hair! Hopefully the moves it learns will be a bit more useful...

430 - I've never used Murkrow, but I've always thought that it should evolve. Good.

431-32 - The scariest Pokemon cats ever.

433 - Chimecho Pre-evolution? Strange.

434-35 - Sweet. A Poison/Dark skunk. Pretty cool.

436-37 - No idea, but it's Steel/Psychic. I like that combination, and the Beldum line is too rare to be all that useful.

438-40 - Pre-evolutions of Mr. Mime, Sudowoodo, and Chansey. Supposedly these will all be wild, and you won't have to breed to get them. Phew...

441 - Perap. Poor thing, it sucks.

442 - ??? It's Ghost/Dark, which means it has no weaknesses, but what the hell is it?

443-45 - Some weird things that are Dragon/Ground. Ice pokemon = death.

446 - Munchlax! Yay!

447-48 - So Lucario evolves from something. I like Steel/Fighting.

449-50 - Cows!!! And not stupid Miltank, actual cows! I like how when it evolves, it basically becomes pissed off.

451-52 - Scorpions~

453-54 - Poison/Fighting frogs? Like, those little tree frogs? Neat.

455 - An actual venus flytrap. Look strange.

456-57 - ??? Is it an angelfish?

458 - Ahh, Tamanta. I love Mantine.

459-60 - Grass/Ice? That's...odd. They look like yetis, or something.

461-77 - All Evolutions of old Pokemon. Most of these are actually pretty neat. Actually, all of them are, because they're all evolutions of ones I wanted evolutions for. That Magneton/UFO thing? Sweet. What looks like Porygon 3? Nice. TANGELA EVOLUTION!!! The two new Eevee evolutions! What will they be, Iveon and...something. The Grass one NEEDS to be Iveon. Now I have more options for that SHINY EEVEE I have~

From here one out, I have no idea what's going on. The three legendaries look like alien jellyfish or something. All in all, I'm really glad to see new evolutions of some REALLY old ones that need something new. Woohoo! Online battling and trading!

Thus ends the longest and saddest update ever.

OMG Awesomes!

So I got the October Game Informer (shut up, it was free with an updated Edge Card (shut up, I buy used games)), and they have their calendar with release dates and crap. There's a square (heh) that talks about when SquareEnix is releasing figurines of summons from Final Fantasy games. I look at it and notice that one of the figures doesn't look like a summon...

!

The one figurine that I would sell my collective souls for is only $16.99 at www.bigbadtoystore.com!!!

Of course, after realising how GREAT A DEAL this is, and how HARD TO FIND these types of things usually are, I wondered if they'll romanize Kefka as Cefca in the GBA port, since Cefca is technically the official Japanese romanization.

The only problem is Cefca/Kefka would look kind of strange sitting next to my super-sexy Vincent Valentine figurine. If I had him, though, all I would need to make my Trinity of Awesome Video Game Characters complete would be plastic sex in the form of...

By the way, Kefka/Cefca >>>>>>>>> Sephiroth. Kefka has personality, man...
